Glenn's Free VNC Utilities

VNC is a great program for doing technical support. On the "receiving support" end, it is a short download, a simple installation, and the instructions for starting it are not too difficult to give over the phone. On the "giving support" end, it is lots faster than having the user read dialog boxes to you, and telling the user exactly what to click and when and where.... even when using VNC over a dialup connection.

(On XP, you cannot use "fast user switching" or "remote admin" together with VNC)

Ultr@VNC contains all the features of VNC, plus more... particularly, it has a friendly toolbar at the top allowing chat, file transfer, easier transmission of Windows hotkeys, and focus on a single window.

I have a separate page of VNC usage tips.

RemoteHelp via VNC

If you often get help via VNC, RemoteHelp can set up a shortcut to launch VNC, and connect to the VNC listener program on a particular remote machine.

There is a special version of RemoteHelp that can be used to connect to me in this manner, called remotehelp_glenn.exe. Please do not use this program unless you contact me first via telephone, email, or Instant Messenger, so that I am expecting the connection, and can turn on my VNC listener. If you give me control of your machine, I happen to have my VNC listener running, and I wasn't expecting it and do not recognize your machine name, I just could delete all your files or something.... you have been warned.
