Glenn's Free VNC Utilities

VNC is a great program for doing technical support. On the "receiving support" end, it is a short download, a simple installation, and the instructions for starting it are not too difficult to give over the phone. On the "giving support" end, it is lots faster than having the user read dialog boxes to you, and telling the user exactly what to click and when and where.... even when using VNC over a dialup connection.

Glenn's Helpdesk is a custom version of VNC that you just download and run, and I can give you help. Warn me first if you can, via phone or Skype, or I might accidentally delete all your files. Just download Glenn's Helpdesk by clicking its link, saving it, and running it. If your antivirus or firewall dislike it, be sure to tell them it is an OK program... if you don't, I can't help you. Sometimes people need help before my DNS entry has propagated to their DNS, or before their resolver cache has expired. While the latter can be solved with a simple command "ipconfig /flushdns", the former needs more help. This program, glenn.nevcal.com.exe, provides that help, and solves both problems. It must be run as administrator, however, in order to preload the local resolver cache.

RemoteHelp via VNC If you often get help via VNC, RemoteHelp can set up a shortcut to launch VNC, and connect to the VNC listener program on a particular remote machine. There is a special version of RemoteHelp that can be used to connect to me in this manner, called remotehelp_glenn.exe. Please do not use this program unless you contact me first via telephone, email, or Instant Messenger, so that I am expecting the connection, and can turn on my VNC listener. If you give me control of your machine, I happen to have my VNC listener running, and I wasn't expecting it and do not recognize your machine name, I just could delete all your files or something.... you have been warned.
